Cats are true carnivores

Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning their bodies are specifically adapted to obtain essential nutrients from animal tissues. They do not simply enjoy meat; they physiologically depend on nutrients associated with it.

Taurine is non-negotiable

Cats cannot produce enough taurine to meet their nutritional needs; this essential amino acid must be supplied through their diet. Taurine supports normal heart function, vision, reproduction, and the formation of bile acids used to digest and absorb fats, making adequate dietary levels critical to long-term feline health. Taurine occurs naturally in raw animal tissues.

Cats need vitamin A ready to use

Cats cannot efficiently convert plant-based beta-carotene into the active vitamin A their bodies need. Their diet must provide preformed vitamin A, which supports healthy vision, immune function, growth, and the maintenance of skin and other body tissues. Liver is a great source of preformed vitamin A!

Arachidonic acid is another feline must-have

Cats cannot produce enough arachidonic acid on their own; this essential omega-6 fatty acid must come directly from their food. Arachidonic acid supports normal cell signaling, reproductive function, and healthy blood-platelet activity. It’s naturally occurring in animal tissues and fats, including meat, organs, eggs, and fish.

Meat alone is not a complete feline diet

Muscle meat by itself does not provide the correct balance of fiber, calcium, phosphorus, vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients. A meat-forward diet still needs to be properly formulated AND complete and balanced.

Dog food does not equal cat food

Dog food is sometimes lower in protein and may not provide assured levels of taurine, preformed vitamin A, arachidonic acid and other feline-specific nutrients. An occasional stolen bite is one thing, but dog food should not be a cat’s regular diet.

Your cat is probably not interested in dessert in the way you think

Cats lack a functional component of the receptor needed to perceive sweetness the way humans and dogs do. A cat investigating ice cream is more likely interested in its fat, aroma or texture than its sugar.

Cats often decide with their noses first

Gently warming, cooking or allowing refrigerated food to lose some of its chill can release more aroma. In older cats warming temperatures support appetite stimulation.

Smooth, minced, shredded and chunky foods all feel different to a cat. Some cats develop strong texture preferences, so matching a familiar consistency can make introducing a new food easier.

A cat’s natural feeding pattern involves finding and eating several small, prey-sized meals, followed by rest, not sitting down to one enormous dinner. Smaller, more frequent portions can better reflect normal feline feeding behavior.

One shared bowl may not be enough

In multi-cat homes, separate feeding stations help prevent one cat from guarding, blocking or quietly intimidating another away from food. Even cats that happily nap together may not want to eat shoulder-to-shoulder. Quiet, individual feeding areas can make meals feel safer and reduce competition.

Water placement matters, too

Cats should always have access to clean, fresh water. Multiple water sources in quiet, accessible locations may encourage drinking, especially in multi-level or multi-cat homes.

A cat refusing food should never become a waiting game

Reduced appetite can accompany dental pain, nausea, stress, and many underlying illnesses. Prolonged food refusal can contribute to potentially life-threatening hepatic lipidosis. Call your veterinarian when a cat stops eating, eats substantially less, loses weight or appears unwell.
